The Dallas Cowboys don’t have much left to play for in the regular season, having wrapped up the NFC East and home-field advantage without even needing to play this week. However, they still have a competitive matchup against the Detroit Lions, who are desperate to hold off a surging Green Bay Packers team in the NFC North.
Lions vs. Cowboys 2016 live stream: How to watch ‘Monday Night Football’ online
The Cowboys locked up the No. 1 seed without even playing, but the Lions still have something to fight for.

This is the season finale of Monday Night Football, which doesn’t have a game scheduled for Week 17. As always, viewers can catch it on ESPN and stream it online at WatchESPN.
The Cowboys clinched the division and No. 1 seed on Thursday night, when the New York Giants fell flat in a 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Sitting pretty at 12-2, Dallas can seemingly take it easy ahead of the playoffs. That said, it doesn’t appear they have any plans to rest their starters. Owner Jerry Jones told the Dallas Morning News that he still remembers the 2007 season, when the Cowboys rested starters in the final regular season game after securing home-field advantage. They ended up losing their home playoff game in the Divisional round, an embarrassing letdown for a team that went 13-3.
Things can easily change if their last two games are a blowout in either direction, but don’t expect to see Tony Romo any time soon. Dak Prescott will stay under center for the time being, while Ezekiel Elliott continues to chase history. At 1,551 yards, he’s just 257 yards away from matching Eric Dickerson’s record of rushing yards for a rookie. Elliott has been sensational this season and is a mortal lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year, although Prescott should steal a few votes away from him.
As for the Lions, their situation is much more precarious. They’re still in first place in the division at 9-5, but Detroit got bullied by the Giants in a 17-6 loss last week, dropping out of the No. 2 seed. The Packers are now 9-6 and already beat them earlier this year. Their Week 17 rematch will decide the division and has been flexed to Sunday Night Football.
Matthew Stafford is still having a good year, but his MVP hype cooled a bit after last week’s game. Playing through an injured finger on his throwing hand, Stafford threw for 273 yards, but tossed a pick and failed to get the Lions into the end zone. That loss snapped the Lions’ five-game winning streak and it couldn’t have come at a worse time, with the division lead in serious danger. That 1-3 start to the season is looming large for Jim Caldwell and company.
MNF has had a rough time this year with poor matchups and ESPN’s inability to flex games, but they should be happy to cap off the season with this game. Assuming the Cowboys play their starters the whole way, this has real potential for a playoff-type atmosphere as the Lions try to save their season.
