Rams extend Jeff Fisher, despite 31-43-1 record

Fisher hasn’t posted a winning record with the Rams, but he received a contract extension anyway.

Jeff Fisher is sticking around with the Los Angeles Rams, even if the wins haven't started rolling in. The team extended the coach for two seasons, keeping him under contract through 2018, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

While news of the extension came late in the season, Fisher told reporters after the game that the extension came in the summer. That means it isn’t necessarily guaranteed that Fisher will be back in 2017 with the team falling to 4-8 in Week 13. After four straight seasons under .500 and a fifth likely to be locked up soon, Fisher has stuck around while the team transitions to a new city.

Fisher, 58, was hired by the Rams with a reputation for getting stuck around .500 during his time with the Tennessee Titans, and he didn't shake it in St. Louis. The Rams finished with seven wins in three of his four seasons at the helm and six wins in 2014.

But the Rams say his experience with relocation made him a coveted leader for the team during the transition from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016. Two decades ago, it was Fisher leading the way for the Houston Oilers when the team moved to Tennessee and eventually became the Titans. In the franchise's third year in Tennessee, it broke out of three straight 8-8 seasons to go 13-3 and make it to the Super Bowl.

Given the amount of change for the Rams, and the fact that it has QB Jared Goff just starting his NFL career, expectations for the team in its first season back in Los Angeles were far from dreams of the Super Bowl. That, coupled with his brand new extension, could keep Fisher with the Rams longer, even if the team adds another losing record or two during his tenure.
