Before the game
The Indianapolis Colts are 5-6, but they aren’t out of the playoff race yet. Far from it, in fact.
The AFC South has been the NFL’s weakest division, led from Week 1 by a Houston Texans team that is now just 6-6 and riding a three-game losing streak. Right there with them is 6-6 Tennessee, a team threatening to make its first playoff appearance since 2008, but one which also counts a pair of matchups against the Colts under its “L” column. Jacksonville, with two wins through three months, is as lost in the woods as a drunken hiker.
That leaves Indianapolis in solid position to bounce back from a 1-3 start and rally to the postseason. The Colts had back-to-back wins before losing on Thanksgiving, 28-7 to the Steelers, but should rebound with Andrew Luck back in the lineup. The Pro Bowl quarterback missed last week’s contest with a concussion, but is expected to play on Monday night.
The New York Jets don’t have such hopes. At 3-8, Todd Bowles’ team has been eliminated from contention to win the AFC East and would need a series of small miracles and a five-game winning streak to make it to the playoffs. That doesn’t mean the Jets will be a pushover in primetime, however. Two of their three wins have come against teams who currently have winning records.
The Colts could take advantage of a weak secondary to get Luck back on track. New York has struggled against competent passers, allowing opposing quarterbacks to post a 94.5 rating this fall — a mark that ranked just 23rd in the league entering the week. The fifth-year quarterback has made a nice comeback from an injury-plagued 2015, posting numbers similar to his breakout 2014, when he guided Indianapolis to the AFC Championship game.
Despite his return to the elite, the Colts haven’t been able to replicate that success. With a losing record, the team is threatening to undo all the recent progress that sent the franchise to the playoffs for 17 of the past 22 seasons. The Jets will try to extend Indianapolis’ recent downturn into a postseason drought on Monday night.
