The Indianapolis Colts (5-6) aren’t out of the playoff hunt just yet, though a 28-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers a week ago didn’t help matters. The Colts were without starting quarterback Andrew Luck due to a concussion, and backup Scott Tolzien couldn’t do enough to continue his team’s only winning streak of the season.

The Colts look to keep their playoff hopes alive.

But with Luck back against a struggling New York Jets (3-8) team, the Colts have a chance to move up in the less-than-impressive AFC South and salvage what would be the team’s first time missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 1997-98.
The Jets are coming in on a three-game losing streak, though all three have come by five points or less. Four of the team’s eight losses have been by one possession, and the Jets have been able to stay in games in part because of their ability to defend the rush. The Jets are allowing just 86 yards per game on the ground — fourth best in the league — and have only allowed six rushing touchdowns.
But that shouldn’t matter much for the Colts, who run the ball just 24 times per game anyway. Leading rusher Frank Gore is averaging 3.8 yards per carry, and has only cracked 100 yards in a game once, against the Texans in overtime. In the loss to Pittsburgh, he posted a mere 28 yards on 15 carries.
Through the air is where Indianapolis has found its success with Luck. The team ranks just outside the top 10 in passing yards with 257 yards per game. T.Y. Hilton is averaging 16 yards per reception, including five touchdowns, as Luck’s clear top target. His 942 receiving yards ranked fifth in the league entering Week 13, and his 20 receptions of 20 or more yards ranked second. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is posting some of the lowest numbers of his career, including just two passes defended and no interceptions, as the Jets rank 22nd in passing yards allowed per game. The Colts should be able to gain ground throwing the ball to keep their playoff hopes alive.
But the Colts have had their defensive woes as well. They’re even worse defending against the pass, allowing the league’s second-most yardage at 279 yards per game. Giving up 22 touchdowns, they’ve picked off just three of 406 throws. The team is allowing the third-most yardage, the most per play, and forced just 11 fumbles.
This Colts-Jets matchup will be the 69th in their history, and Indianapolis comes in with a 40-28 series lead, though the Jets have won the last three. The most recent win came in September of last season, when the Colts managed just seven points at home and Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for two touchdowns and 244 yards. Brandon Marshall had seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown — in the three most recent games against Indianapolis, he’s caught 37 passes for 420 yards and four touchdowns.
The Colts will need to stop him to remain in playoff contention. They currently trail the Tennessee Titans (6-6) and Houston Texans (6-6) in the division.
