The winner of the AFC West, a first-round bye, possible home-field advantage in the playoffs, and even some NFL MVP votes may all rest on the outcome of Thursday Night Football. Week 14’s tilt between the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs may just be the biggest regular season game of 2016.
The 10-2 Raiders currently lead the AFC, but the 9-3 Chiefs are right on their heels. A win on Thursday would push Kansas City into the top spot in the AFC West and position them to earn a one-week bye for the first week of the playoffs. The Chiefs already have a road win over their division rival. Now they’ll get the chance to welcome them to Missouri.
Home-field advantage could be a real factor. It was 61 degrees when the Raiders took the field last Sunday. On Thursday, the temperature is expected to drop to 16 during the evening and will near 0 with the wind chill.
The cold weather may not be enough to slow down MVP candidate Derek Carr. A dislocated finger on his throwing hand hasn’t — Carr found extra corners on his pinky after a botched snap two weeks ago, but missed only a single series because of the injury. He lit up the Buffalo Bills last Sunday for 260 yards and a pair of touchdown passes in a 38-24 victory.
He’ll stare down one of the league’s toughest secondaries on Thursday night. The Chiefs rank second in the NFL after forcing 14 interceptions this fall. They’re holding passers to a rating of just 87.6 — making opponents look just a bit better than Colin Kaepernick in 2016.
The Raiders have a frightful defensive weapon of their own. Khalil Mack has ascended from All-Pro to probable Defensive Player of the Year, thanks to a monster campaign in which he has recorded three rally-killing strip sacks.
Thursday’s game will be a chess match — a violent, frigid, exciting chess match where one team will stake its claim to the top spot in the NFL’s toughest division. It’s going to be awesome.
The divisional showdown will air on NBC and NFL Network, while live streaming is available at NBC Sports and on Twitter.
