Cowboys DE Randy Gregory suspended 4 games for violating substance abuse policy

The second-year player violated the league’s substance abuse policy.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has been suspended for the first four games of the upcoming season, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Gregory's suspension is for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy. It's not clear what the substance in question actually was, but Gregory has a history with marijuana.

Gregory was considered one of the top prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft until he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine. He took responsibility for the failed test and wound up being drafted by the Cowboys in the second round.

He played in 12 games last season, putting up just 11 total tackles. He played far less than many expected but the Cowboys had other talent along the defensive line. Gregory does have a high ceiling, and the Cowboys were likely going to prep him for a starting role in the offseason program. Fortunately for the team, Gregory will still be allowed to attend said workout program.

Dallas’ schedule for 2016 has not been released so it’s unclear which games he will be missing.

Baltimore Ravens tight end Nick Boyle was also suspended on Friday, a 10-game ban for PEDs. It's the second suspension of his career.
