Marques Colston released after 10 years with Saints

The 32-year-old receiver will be looking for a new team this offseason.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

After 10 seasons, the New Orleans Saints are parting ways with Marques Colston. It was made official Monday, with the Saints placing a failed physical designation on the veteran receiver. The 32-year-old leaves as the franchise's all-time leading receiver in yards and touchdowns. The move will save New Orleans $3.2 million against the cap, but the team will be taking on $2.7 million in dead money.

Colston has been a fixture in New Orleans since a breakout rookie year. A seventh-round draft pick out of Hofstra in 2006, Colston quickly earned a starting job and finished his first year with 70 catches for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns. He went on to enjoy a long career as one of Drew Brees' most trusted weapons, recording 711 catches, 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns. He was an instrumental player in the Saints' march to their first-ever Super Bowl victory in the 2009 season.

However, Colston began slowing down in recent years and was reduced to a supporting role in 2015, catching just 45 passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games. The Saints will move forward with Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead and Brandon Coleman as their top three receivers.

Colston should land on his feet somewhere, but likely in a part-time playing role. Look for him to pursue a contending team and push for one more Super Bowl ring.
