NFL Combine results 2016: DL Chris Mayes leads the position with 33 reps in bench press

Chris Mayes is the strongest defensive lineman, putting up 33 reps of 225 pounds on Saturday.

The bench press is important to plenty of positions at the NFL Combine, though it may be most important for defensive linemen. A strong core is important for any defensive linemen, whether they are trying to get past a right tackle to sack a quarterback or shed a block from an interior lineman to get a hand on a running back trying to get through the gap.

Raw strength will not create a good football player by any means, but the strongest defensive linemen will at least have that advantage going their way. On Saturday, defensive linemen and linebackers took to the weight room to see how many reps of 225 pounds they could each put up.

Offensive lineman Christian Westerman led the combine with 34 reps of 225 pounds, and a pair of fullbacks also put up 30 reps each. Most figured the defensive linemen would have plenty of competition for this, but surprisingly, the highest was 33 reps from Georgia's Chris Mayes. It's still an impressive number, but they were unable to unseat the offensive lineman.

Ronald Blair and Matthew Ioannidis both had 32 reps, while all of Andrew Billings, D.J. Reader, Dean Lowry and Matt Judon also managed at least 30 reps. There were also a handful of players who put up 28 and 29 reps, so there weren't many disappointing performances in the weight room on Saturday.

Below, we’ve got the full bench results for defensive linemen.
