Super Bowl 2016 coin toss prop bet: Results for the opening coin toss

The Super Bowl provides a variety of random prop bets connected to events on and off the field. National anthem length remains a popular prop bet, and we’ve got the results from Super Bowl 50.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The first "football decision" of Super Bowl 50 involves one team calling the coin toss. Given that there are two potential outcomes, Super Bowl prop betting allows for multiple wagers on the toss. You can bet if it will land on heads or tails, which team will win the coin toss, if the team making the call will win the coin toss, and if the coin toss winner will win the game.

This year also features a new prop bet on whether or not the referee will have to redo the coin toss. Clete Blakeman will be the official handling the coin toss. In the NFC divisional round, he flipped the coin for the Arizona Cardinals-Green Bay Packers game. The coin did not rotate in the air, and so he had to re-do the coin flip. This pays 20/1 if the coin toss has to be redone.

We have results on the first three wagers, and will update this article once the winner of the game has been determined. The coin landed on TAILS. The Panthers called TAILS and WON the coin toss.

Before the 2015 Super Bowl, heads and tails had evenly split the first 48 Super Bowls. Heads had a five-year run from 2009 to 2013, and tails came up nine of 11 seasons from 1998 to 2006. Each coin toss is an independent event, however, so one cannot simply wager on one side of the coin being “hot,” or one side being due to come up.

Both heads and tails were paying out at -105, meaning a $105 bet won $100 if the correct result came up. The team result was much the same, paying out -105 on an even bet between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos.

One prop bet relating to the coin toss remains: the game winner. The proposition that the coin toss winner will go on to win the Super Bowl is paying -105, but obviously that can’t be determined until the game is over.
