Aqib Talib would’ve been ejected under Roger Goodell’s proposed rule change

Aqib Talib picked up two personal fouls in the first half of the Super Bowl.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a rough Super Bowl for Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib. In fact, he would’ve already been ejected from the game if Roger Goodell’s proposed rule change was in effect.

At Friday’s annual “State of the League” address, Goodell proposed a new rule that would eject any player who picks up two personal fouls in the same game. Talib achieved that feat in the first half alone.

The first infraction was for a taunting penalty, which prolonged a Panthers drive after a failed third-down conversion. The second was for a facemask on Panthers wide receiver Philly Brown, setting up a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. One play later, Jonathan Stewart leaped over the line of scrimmage to get the Panthers on the board.

Should Goodell’s new rule be in effect, Talib would be out of the game, which would be a major blow to the Broncos’ secondary. Talib had another solid season, forming an elite tandem with Chris Harris Jr., but Sunday is not one of his finest performances, so far.

Talib’s struggles didn’t end after the touchdown -- he was flagged for an offsides on the extra-point attempt.
