Brandon Browner released after nightmare 2015 season

Browner was by far the worst cornerback in the NFL last season.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Cornerback Brandon Browner is one-and-done in New Orleans. The Saints released the free agent bust on Thursday, according to Katherine Terrell of The Times-Picayune, just a year after signing him to a three-year deal worth $15 million, with $7.75 million guaranteed.

The Saints save just $950,000 in the cap, while taking on $5.35 million in dead money. That’s a tough pill to swallow for the Saints, who are already struggling to free up cap space. But it was an expected move and a necessary move after Browner’s disastrous 2015 season.

Browner had successful stints with the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, but he had some obvious flaws, like his tendency to commit back-breaking penalties and get burned by straight-line speedsters.

All of those flaws came to head last season. Browner led the league with 23 penalties and opposing quarterbacks targeted him with glee. He was constantly on the losing end of highlight-reel plays from opposing wide receivers.

The Saints will move forward with Delvin Breaux as their No. 1 cornerback, and hope to have Keenan Lewis (who played just six games) back healthy. Meanwhile, it's looking like the end of the line for Browner, who is 31 years old and has a tarnished reputation. A return to the CFL can't be ruled out for him.
