Jaguars bolster secondary by signing Prince Amukamara

Amukamara was an above-average starter for the Giants, but struggled to stay healthy in the last two seasons.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Former New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara joined the Jacksonville Jaguars, signing a one-year deal with the team in free agency.

“I thought it would be my best bet to bet on myself for the one-year deal and prove that I’m a force in this league,” Amukamara said. “I feel like when I’m on the field a lot of great things happen, so I just want to put 16 games of that together.”

Amukamara, 26, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Giants after playing out his rookie contract, including a fifth-year option that paid him about $6.9 million in 2015.

The principle concern for Jacksonville will be whether Amukamara is able to stay healthy enough to make that paycheck worth signing. He sat out 13 games over the last two seasons due to a pectoral injury in 2015 and a biceps tear in 2014, but was an above-average cornerback for the Giants when on the field.

It took some time for Amukamara to come into his own, hardly even seeing the field as a rookie. But when he eventually took over the starting role he did well. Seven career interceptions does leave some big plays to be desired from Amukamara and ultimately made him a forgettable member of a 2011 draft class that also featured Patrick Peterson and Richard Sherman.
