Broncos acquire Mark Sanchez in trade with Eagles

Sanchez joins Trevor Siemian as the only quarterbacks on the Denver roster.

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos have acquired quarterback Mark Sanchez in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Mike Klis of 9News. The Eagles will receive a conditional seventh-round pick in 2017, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Sanchez, 29, has played in 13 games for the Eagles since he joined the team in 2014, but with Doug Pederson taking over as head coach and Sam Bradford seemingly the quarterback of the future, Sanchez was made available for trade.

Sanchez was looking like the primary backup until the Eagles signed Chase Daniel. That made Sanchez even more expendable, which is why the Eagles are getting a conditional draft pick as opposed to something more significant right off the bat.

He now joins a Broncos roster that only has Trevor Siemian as competition at the quarterback position. At this point, Sanchez would be slotting in as the starting quarterback, though rumors have connected the Broncos to a potential trade for Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers and even free agent Robert Griffin III. Sanchez isn't a big enough name to take the Broncos out of those discussions.

Last season, Sanchez completed 59 of 91 passes for 616 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. The previous year, he played in nine games, completing 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,418 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. To his credit, he looked much better with the Eagles than he ever did with the New York Jets, the team that selected him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
