Colts sign Patrick Robinson after a bounce-back season

Robinson was a bargain for the Chargers last year, and now he’s expected to be an integral part of the Colts’ secondary.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Former first-round pick Patrick Robinson was an afterthought in free agency a year ago, but that's no longer the case. The Indianapolis Colts signed the cornerback to a three-year, $12 million contract Wednesday, marking the most significant addition they've made to their secondary so far in free agency.

Robinson, 28, signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the San Diego Chargers last season and far exceeded expectations, starting in 10 games. Thought to be a depth signing and a player who could compete for a roster spot, Robinson was instead a solid player who showed more consistency than he ever managed to put together in five seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

Even after his resurgent year, it’s tough to imagine that Robinson will step in as a full-time starter and top-level cornerback for the Colts, but he certainly adds depth and should be a reliable option who can contribute on the outside or in the slot.

Robinson has appeared in 74 games over a six-year career and has 10 career interceptions and 54 passes defended.
