Knighton believed he was worth a big contract in 2015, but didn’t prove it in his one season in Washington.

The Patriots officially announced the signing on Monday.
The run-stuffing nose tackle known as "Pot Roast" earned spotlight during a two-year stint with the Denver Broncos that earned him endorsements and name recognition, something he wasn't really able to do during his first four NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But when he hit the free agency market in 2015, he was disappointed in the lack of interest.
Knighton signed a one-year, “prove it” deal with Washington and drew praise from the team’s general manager Scot McCloughan for betting on himself. Via Conor Orr of NFL.com:
“He wants the big contract -- which I love,” Scot McCloughan recently said. “Come in here play, you know? Be a Pro Bowler. I’m going to take care of you.”
The problem is that he wasn’t a Pro Bowler in his one season in the NFC East. He played 375 snaps in 15 games in 2015, according to Pro Football Focus, an average of 25 snaps per game. While he wasn’t bad during his time on the field, opposing rushers averaged 4.8 yards per carry against Washington, the second-highest mark in the NFL.
Knighton turns 30 in July, but will look to prove in New England that he’s still one of the better run stuffers in the NFL and worth a big pay day.
