Bills release CB Leodis McKelvin to avoid $4.9 million cap hit

McKelvin has spent his entire career with the Bills after the team drafted him in the first round in 2008.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Leodis McKelvin is a free agent after eight seasons with the Buffalo Bills after the team that drafted him in the first round in the 2008 NFL Draft elected to release the cornerback on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

McKelvin, 30, played in 98 games in eight seasons with the Bills and bounced around the secondary, even playing at safety some during the 2015 season. He was due to count $4.9 million against the salary cap in 2016 and was scheduled to receive a $750,000 roster bonus next Friday.

With the release, the Bills will clear up nearly $4 million in space and carry $1 million in dead money from McKelvin.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise after the Bills cleared plenty of cap space by releasing Mario Williams. However, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock after McKelvin spoke to The Buffalo News in December about his willingness to take a pay cut to avoid being released.

On the open market, McKelvin should have no problem drawing interest after proving himself to be a solid cornerback, but he’s not a player who will draw a blockbuster deal either, and might not even get a starting job in 2016.
