TE Ben Watson agrees to 2-year deal with Ravens

The Ravens added Watson to their deep group of tight ends.

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

After a career-best 2015 season for tight end Ben Watson, the Baltimore Ravens are hoping to recapture lightning in a bottle. The Ravens have agreed to a contract with the 35-year-old free agent to lure him away from New Orleans. Ian Rapoport is reporting it's a two-year deal, worth $8 million.

While Watson has had a long and accomplished career, he's getting up there in age and most people thought that the veteran would wind things down soon. Before 2015, Watson had never reached 70 catches or 800 yards in a season despite playing 12 seasons.

In his 13th season, however, Watson enjoyed a breakout campaign, setting personal highs of 74 catches and 825 yards while tying a high with six touchdowns.

The Ravens have spent considerable resources at tight end over the past few years, drafting Crockett Gillmore and Maxx Williams in 2014 and 2015, respectively. However, Gillmore underwent surgery on both shoulders this offseason and reserve Nick Boyle has been suspended for the first 10 games of the season. Watson could fill in for either due to his complete skill set.
