Tamba Hali returns to Chiefs on 3-year deal

Tamba Hali looks to finish out his career with the team that drafted him.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Free agent Tamba Hali has re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal, which keeps Hali in Kansas City for the next three years, should allow the outside linebacker to finish his career with the team that drafted him.

Hali has spent his entire NFL career with the Chiefs, a team he joined when they made him a first-round pick in 2006. He has played in at least 15 games in every season of his career, and has played a full 16-game season six times.

In 15 games last season, Hali had 48 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass defensed. At 32 years of age, he has slowed down, but is a reliable tackler and still has what it takes to get to the quarterback. In 10 seasons in the NFL, Hali had 556 combined tackles, 86 sacks, 32 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Hali was technically signed with the Chiefs for several more years, but that was for contract purposes to help the Chiefs save cap space in 2015. Hali’s remaining years all voided and he became a free agent at the start of the new league year.

While Hali will turn 33 during the 2016 season, he earned his sixth career Pro Bowl berth this past season. He dealt with knee injuries that kept him out of most team practices last season, so that will be something to monitor this coming season.
