Jaguars sign S Tashaun Gipson to continue spending spree

Gipson is the third significant free agent acquisition for the Jaguars this week.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Former Cleveland Browns free safety Tashaun Gipson has signed a five-year, $35.5 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to NFL Network’s Rand Getlin. After failing to extend the safety’s contract last offseason, the Browns knew Gipson was interested in testing the waters of free agency, and when they didn’t use the franchise tag on him, he got his wish.

Gipson missed three games in 2015 with an ankle injury, but was still a key piece in the team’s defense throughout the season. He amassed 60 total combined tackles (42 solo) and two interceptions in 13 games. Two seasons prior, in 2013, he put up numbers that included 95 total combined tackles, 11 passes defended, five interceptions and a touchdown.

He has proven to have a very high ceiling, but with only four years in the league he has a lot of learning still to do. Gipson was ranked among PFF’s Top 75 free agents, coming in at No. 38, acknowledging his inconsistent career but incredible upside.

Gipson is the third starter to leave the Browns Wednesday, along with offensive linemen Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz. Mack and Schwartz played every snap last season.

The Jaguars, who had over $80 million in cap space entering free agency, have spent heavily this week. In addition to Gipson, they’ve signed defensive lineman Malik Jackson and running back Chris Ivory.
