Marcedes Lewis will stay with the Jaguars for 3 more seasons

Jacksonville re-signs its longest-tenured player.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Tight end Marcedes Lewis has only known one team in his career, and he'll continue playing there in 2016. The Jaguars signed the 31-year-old to a three-year contract extension, ensuring that he'll play an 11th season with the team.

Lewis is the Jaguars' longest-tenured player, loyally sticking with the team ever since it selected him in the first round of the 2006 draft. It may be hard to remember that fact given how anonymous Lewis has been in recent years. He hasn't reached 50 catches or 500 yards since 2012, and is mostly a pure blocker these days, having been phased out in favor or Julius Thomas. He had a minor role in 2015, catching just 16 passes for 226 yards while recording zero touchdowns for the first time since 2011.

Having said that, Lewis brings some veteran presence that is valuable for a young Jaguars offense. He's been in Jacksonville long enough that keeping him at this point could be a show of loyalty, if nothing else. The 31-year-old doesn't bring much to the table otherwise.
