Derrick Johnson agrees to new 3-year deal with the Chiefs

Kansas City brings the linebacker back on a three-year deal.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Long-time Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson has re-signed with the Chiefs, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. The contract is reportedly a three-year deal worth $21 million.

Johnson, 33, was a first-round pick by the Chiefs in 2005 and they got more out of him than they ever expected. In 154 career games, Johnson’s compiled nearly 1,000 tackles, 26.5 sacks, 22 forced fumbled, seven fumble recoveries, 13 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns. He started all 16 games with Kansas City last season and compiled 116 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumble and a pair of interceptions.

He’ll turn 34 during the 2016 season, but Johnson still obviously has plenty left in the tank at this stage of his career. Inside linebackers typically last longer than the athleticism-oriented pass rushers on the defensive line and the outside linebacker position. Johnson is a leader in the locker room and a leader on the field.

Johnson has been named to four Pro Bowls, including this past year’s game, was a first-team All-Pro player in 2011 and a second-team All-Pro player in 2015. He has played his entire career with the Chiefs.

In addition to retaining Johnson, the Chiefs added offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz Wednesday. Cornerback Sean Smith is still a free agent.
