Bears sign LB Danny Trevathan to 4-year contract

Trevathan will immediately upgrade the Bears’ front seven.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Free agent inside linebacker Danny Trevathan has signed a four-year deal with the Chicago Bears on the first day of free agency. Trevathan is one of the more talented, exciting young players to actually hit the market this offseason. He'll be 26 years old when the 2016 season gets underway, and has three productive seasons in the four years since the Denver Broncos took him in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The deal is worth around $28 million, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Trevathan was a spot player in his first season, but in 2013 was given a starting role and racked up 129 tackles, two sacks, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just three games in the 2014 season, but he returned for the final year of his rookie deal and looked like his old self.

Last season, he played in 15 games and compiled 109 combined tackles and two interceptions. He also scored on one of those interceptions. In 50 career games, he has 282 tackles, three sacks, five interceptions, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Trevathan was an integral part of Denver's league-best defense last season, and now has a Super Bowl ring for his troubles after the Broncos took down the Carolina Panthers in the big game.
