Mike Tolbert re-signs with Panthers on 2-year deal

Mike Tolbert may be getting up there in years, but the 30-year-old fullback isn't going anywhere soon. Tolbert signed a new two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, the team announced on Wednesday, ensuring that he will stick around a little while longer in Charlotte.

It’s a cheap deal for Tolbert worth a maximum of $4 million over the two years, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Tolbert started his career with the San Diego Chargers, where he spent four years as a backup runner. He had his best season in 2010, rushing for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2012, he signed a four-year deal with the Panthers worth $10 million, including $4.2 million guaranteed.

Tolbert hasn’t seen many carries in the Panthers (his highest total was 101 in 2013), but he’s valued for converting short-yardage situations and his blocking ability is solid. Tolbert made both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams in 2013 and 2015. He’s also known for his strong dancing prowess.

The Panthers are trying to keep together their main core that went 15-1 and went to the Super Bowl. Although Tolbert doesn't play a huge role in the offense, he should continue being a decent veteran contributor.
