Damon Harrison went from undrafted player to $46.25 million deal with Giants

Harrison went from undrafted to a massive contract extension in just a few short years as a dependable starter for the Jets. But now he’ll be joining the Giants.

The New York Giants will sign defensive tackle Damon Harrison, according to Rand Getlin of the NFL Network. The deal is huge for him, a five-year contract worth $46.25 million. Harrison was an undrafted player out of William Penn in 2012 and joined the New York Jets as a free agent

He didn’t see much playing time as a rookie, but has been a dependable starter over the past three seasons. Harrison has played in all 16 games in each of the past three seasons, putting up high tackle numbers but not much else. He’s primarily been a nose tackle, set to take up space, and he’s done well in this area with 17 credited run stuffs to his name.

In 2015, Harrison had 72 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks, a forced fumble and eight stuffs behind the line of scrimmage. Harrison was named a Pro Football Focus All-Pro and was given the publication’s “Best Run Defender” award for this past season.

As an undrafted free agent, Harrison made less than $1 million per season for three of his four seasons with the Jets. With the reported $46.25 million number of five years, that’s just over $9 million per season, a significant pay raise that nobody could have predicted.
