The Seattle Seahawks backed up five selections to No. 31 in the draft order, sending the No. 26 pick to the Denver Broncos.
Seahawks trade down to No. 31 in swap with Broncos
The Broncos jumped up five picks to secure a quarterback.
Seattle hasn't been too concerned with adding first-round rookies in recent years, and hasn't made a first-round pick since 2012, trading away first rounders for Percy Harvin and Jimmy Graham. While going back to the No. 31 pick gives the Seahawks the last pick in the first round, it's indicative of the type of draft strategy that the Seahawks have employed often during the John Schneider and Pete Carroll era.
The Seahawks received a third-round pick from the Broncos, who moved up to secure the third quarterback off the board, taking Paxton Lynch with the No. 26 pick. After Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were selected with the first two picks, the Broncos had to wait a long time to see what quarterbacks would be available. When no other player went in the next 23 selections, Denver jumped at its opportunity to grab the third quarterback.
Seattle doesn’t have any glaring needs like the Broncos did at quarterback, so moving back and acquiring another second-day pick made sense.
