NFL Draft 2016: Time, TV schedule and more for Rounds 2-3
There are plenty of hidden gems to be found on the second day of the NFL Draft.
One round in the books, six to go. The NFL Draft continues on Friday night with rounds two and three televised live from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, starting at 7 p.m. ET. While many of the elite guys are off the board, plenty of talent remains available for teams on the draft's second day.
Among the players still available is UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, who was considered to be a top five-pick before concerns about his knee began to submarine his draft stock in the weeks before the first round began. He’s still on the board on Friday, along with other highly touted players like Kevin Dodd, A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed.
The players taken in the first round are off the board for a good reason -- they're the very best prospects in the nation and the ones most likely to become stars in the NFL -- but that doesn't mean you can't find exceptional players in the middle rounds. More than 25 Hall of Famers have been taken in the second and third rounds, including some guys named Joe Montana and Brett Favre.
More recently, perennial Pro Bowlers such as Rob Gronkowski, Steve Smith and Drew Brees had to wait to hear their names called until after the first round. Teams can get terrific value from picks in these later rounds, and with such a deep draft class this year, there figures to be a bunch of steals and hidden gems to be found on day two of the draft.
The action gets started with the Cleveland Browns on the clock for the initial pick of the second round. After sitting out round one because of the penalties from DeflateGate, the New England Patriots will make their first selection of the draft at No. 60. The Kansas City Chiefs also haven't yet made a pick after trading out of the first round on Thursday night, and are instead slated to add the first player of the draft class with the No. 37 pick.
The pace should be a bit quicker on Friday night as teams get less time to make their decisions. They are allotted seven minutes to determine their selections in the second round, and that drops to five minutes per pick for the third round.
Just like Thursday, both ESPN and the NFL Network will provide comprehensive coverage of the festivities all night. The NFL Network has its top-tier roster of hosts, analysts and reporters for its broadcast, plus the notable addition of Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on the main set. For ESPN, Trey Wingo replaces Chris Berman at the desk, while Todd McShay takes over draft guru duties from Mel Kiper Jr.
