Titans make Southern Miss CB Kalan Reed the Mr. Irrelevant of the 2016 NFL Draft

Southern Miss cornerback Kalan Reed was named the 2016 Mr. Irrelevant.

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans selected Southern Mississippi cornerback Kalan Reed with the last selection of the 2016 NFL Draft at No. 253 overall, making him the newest Mr. Irrelevant.

The title of Mr. Irrelevant has taken on a life of its own when former Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts receiver Paul Salata founded an "Irrelevant Week" in 1976. The tongue-in-cheek event in Newport Beach, Calif. features a Lowsman Trophy, a parade and other honors for whichever player is "lucky" enough to be selected last.

While in most cases, the Mr. Irrelevant pick usually struggles just to make an NFL roster, in some cases, the selection has thrived. Linebacker David Vobora was taken with the final pick of the 2008 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams and started in 16 games over three seasons with the team before leaving to join the Seattle Seahawks in 2011, which proved to be the last season of his short NFL career.

A year after Vobora, kicker Ryan Succop was taken with the last pick by the Kansas City Chiefs and earned the starting job, which he held for five seasons. He eventually left to join the Tennessee Titans in free agency in 2015 on a three-year, $7.2 million contract and made 14 of 16 field goal attempts as well as 29 of 31 extra point attempts last season.

The pick originally belonged to the Denver Broncos, but it was traded to the Titans earlier on Saturday.
