The Chargers laughed at your bad mock drafts

Many experts thought the Chargers would take Ronnie Stanley with the No. 3 pick.

The San Diego Chargers shocked everyone with the selection of Joey Bosa in the 2016 NFL Draft, choosing the defensive end over Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil and Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey, among other prospects.

In the 115 mock drafts surveyed by SB Nation, not a single one projected Bosa to the Chargers.

“It was amusing to see,” Chargers president John Spanos told Chargers.com. “We would sit back, read these mock drafts and see who people thought we would take. We would look around at each other and say, ‘Man, I can’t believe no one knows.’”

In the final days before the first round began, there was growing momentum that Notre Dame offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley could be the surprise selection for the Chargers. While just seven percent of mock drafts projected Stanley to San Diego, it included the final mock drafts of prominent pundits like ESPN’s Todd McShay, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein and Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller.

Via McShay:

“This is a good time to remind everyone: I’m projecting what will happen, not what I would do if I ran each team. I’m hearing the Chargers have Stanley higher on their board than Ole Miss’ Laremy Tunsil, so the Notre Dame product is the pick.”

“Sometimes when you hear rumors, you can piece together where it came from,” Spanos told Chargers.com. “In the specific case of the Ronnie Stanley rumor, I have no clue where that came from. So I was really amused, and I didn’t feel a need to set the record straight. I just sat back and enjoyed the false speculation.”

Stanley ended up being a bit of a draft day surprise when the Baltimore Ravens picked him at No. 6 overall, despite Tunsil still sitting on the board. But the shakeup started with the No. 3 pick and the Chargers thought the whole thing was a lot of fun.
