Mike Carey is out as the rules expert for CBS, according to report

CBS is moving on without Mike Carey as the network’s NFL rules expert, according to Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News, following two years of Carey getting consistently criticized and ridiculed for being wrong more often than fans were willing to put up with.

Carey was hired by CBS before the 2015 season after FOX found success with Mike Pereira serving the same role. In his first season with FOX, Pereira correctly predicted 98 percent of the reviews on the field, but Carey was closer to 90 percent.

In Super Bowl 50, there was a prop bet available on Bovada about Carey getting a challenge wrong. "Yes" was the slight underdog but proved to be the winner when Carey botched a call in the first quarter, incorrectly predicting that an incomplete pass to Jerricho Cotchery would be overturned.

In reality, Carey got a bad rap and wasn’t nearly as bad an everyone thought he was. He had 24 years of experience as an NFL referee, but with the amount of criticism and jokes, it was getting harder for fans to believe and respect the opinion of CBS’s expert.

The plan, according to Raissman, could include Dean Blandino, the NFL’s vice president of officiating taking over the role. It’s also possible that another retired official could step in for Carey.
