Browns ‘Cape of Sadness’ retired after Cavaliers’ championship win

Cleveland is suddenly a city of optimism after the Cavs won the NBA Finals, so the “Cape of Sadness” is no more.

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland is reveling in life as a city with a championship after the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied from down 3-1 in the NBA Finals to defeat the Golden State Warriors. With the first major sports championship in 52 years officially secured, there's no room for negativity in Cleveland.

And with that meant the retirement of the “Cape of Sadness.”

The famous jersey was once just a Tim Couch jersey, but eventually showed the names of 24 quarterbacks who started a game for the Browns since 1999. On Monday morning, the "Cape of Sadness" was no more.

Now that the Cavaliers are champions, the wallowing and self-pity in Cleveland is being left in the rear-view mirror. But wait -- the Browns still have plenty of problems at quarterback. Unless ...

NBA Finals MVP LeBron James put the city of Cleveland on his back and ended its five-decade championship drought. The next logical step is for James to become the quarterback of the Browns and lead the team to its first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

But even if it’s not LeBron dropping back to pass, it’s a new day in Cleveland and that means the “Cape of Sadness” is a thing of the past, no matter how subpar the Browns’ quarterback situation currently looks.
