The Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns are two franchises that have been polar opposites for decades, and the two teams enter the first week of the preseason on different paths.

RG3 makes his debut in a Browns uniform.

In the last seven years, Aaron Rodgers has led the Packers to the postseason, and the team has tinkered with the roster each offseason, but not dramatically. The goal for Green Bay each year is to get from good to great or great to excellent.
That’s why it’s not really necessary for the team to risk too much in preseason. It’s unlikely that Rodgers will even play on Friday night. With Brett Hundley also out of action due to an ankle injury, the only other quarterbacks on roster for the Packers are a pair of undrafted rookies.
For the Browns, the performances of quarterbacks in the first week of preseason is much more important. While the Packers made slight tweaks during the offseason, Cleveland is beginning an entirely new era under head coach Hue Jackson and general manager Sashi Brown.
Robert Griffin III has performed well enough in his first few months with the Browns that he’s already been named the team’s starter; however, Friday will be his first game action in a Cleveland uniform. Yet considering his injury history, which included a nightmarish preseason last year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jackson be cautious with Griffin.
Still, it’s valuable reps for Griffin in a new setting with a new coach and new players around him. Wide receivers Andrew Hawkins and Corey Coleman will be out of action due to hamstring injuries, so Griffin won’t have his full arsenal, but he can still get his first experience with Jackson’s offense against a live defense.
Receiver Terrelle Pryor, however, should be ready to go after he dealt with some calf issues during practice this week. It remains to be seen how much playing time Jackson will allocate to his starters, but as the team adapts to a new scheme, Jackson may try to get the starters more experience in preseason.
For the Packers, it’ll be tough to have too many takeaways. The team was likely relieved it didn’t have to play in the canceled Hall of Fame Game and really probably wouldn’t mind just fast-forwarding to the regular season. Jordy Nelson suffered a devastating injury during the preseason in 2015, and the top priority for Green Bay is avoiding a similar disaster.
But preseason is truly important for the players on the bottom half of the roster, and Green Bay’s pair of undrafted rookie quarterbacks will get a huge opportunity Friday night.
Joe Callahan has earned the No. 3 spot on the depth chart ahead of Marquise Williams, although both are likely to get plenty of reps on Friday night. Callahan was ridiculously productive at Division III’s Wesley College, finishing his career with 130 touchdowns, but the NFL is a monumental jump.
This also presents an opportunity for fans to get a first look at veteran tight end Jared Cook, who stands to become a big factor in the Packers’ passing game this season. Fresh off the PUP list, Cook is one player to watch for Green Bay -- even if no one knows the name of the quarterback throwing him the ball.
