Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs in his preseason debut with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced on Saturday.

Wentz was the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft but isn’t expected to be the starter for the Eagles as long as Sam Bradford is still at the top of the depth chart. Wentz is currently third on the depth chart behind Bradford and Chase Daniel but will now miss time due to the rib injury.

“Carson felt discomfort and soreness as we began this morning’s practice,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said on Saturday. “We decided to limit him throughout the remainder of practice and, as a precaution, sent him for a CT scan after practice. The scan revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs. We do not know an exact timetable for his return, but we hope to have him back before the end of preseason.”

It’s far from disastrous news for a team that wants to bring along the former North Dakota State quarterback patiently, but missed time for the rookie isn’t the greatest start to his first training camp either.

In his first preseason action, Wentz completed 12 of 24 passes for 89 yards and ran for 15 yards on three carries. It wasn’t a stellar performance, but he showed many of the promising skills that convinced the Eagles to trade away several draft picks to the Cleveland Browns to acquire him.
