Ryan Fitzpatrick got a haircut

Fitzpatrick’s unruly mushroom-shaped coif is no more.

Jeanna Kelley has been covering the Falcons for The Falcoholic since 2011 and the NFL for SB Nation since 2015.

Up until Wednesday, Ryan Fitzpatrick had arguably the most amazing hair in the NFL. That mantle may pass to another player, because Fitzpatrick cut his hair prior to Wednesday’s practice.

Fitzpatrick’s hair has almost been a bigger story than the one-year, $12 million contract he finally signed with the New York Jets, and for good reason. His thick, luscious locks, which appear to defy gravity, were rivaled only by his substantial beard.

Fitzpatrick looked like Beavis, if Beavis had actually been able to grow a beard. If he would have said he spent his offseason serving as an extra in the wildlings’ scenes in Game of Thrones, we wouldn’t have been surprised. His hair was spectacular.

Now, though, it just looks like the average, run-of-the-mill hair of any old NFL quarterback.

Fitzpatrick told ESPN’s Suzy Kolber that the hair was a nice distraction during his difficult contract negotiations with the Jets, and that he wasn’t particularly worried about what anyone thought about his hair.

“I’m not really trying to impress anybody,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’ve already got my wife locked down, hopefully.”

It does sound like Fitzpatrick’s decision to move on from the wild hairstyle is paying off, at least initially.

It remains to be seen whether the haircut will help the Harvard-educated quarterback duplicate last year’s success when the season rolls around. Fitzpatrick set career marks in 2015 in passing yards with 3,905 and touchdowns with 31.
