Russell Wilson suffers ankle injury vs. Dolphins and still leads Seahawks to win

Wilson was clearly not 100 percent, but played through the injury and led Seattle to a come-from-behind win.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of the team’s Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins. Wilson shrugged off the injury as not serious after the game, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports it's a significant sprain that puts his availability for Week 2 in doubt.

Wilson suffered the injury on a sack by Ndamukong Suh, who stepped on the quarterback’s heel as he went to the ground. Suh has a questionable history of stepping on and kicking players, but the contact that twisted the ankle of Wilson appeared to be entirely accidental.

While Wilson finished the drive with a handoff on second down and an incomplete pass on third down, he was unable to move at all before gingerly walking off the field.

Seahawks backup Trevone Boykin warmed up on the sideline, but Wilson got the ankle heavily taped and re-entered the game for the next drive without missing a snap, even though his mobility was clearly lacking. Wilson completed his first pass of the drive for 11 yards, but the Seahawks then turned the ball over on downs.

Any kind of significant injury to Wilson would be devastating for the Seahawks. The fifth-year quarterback already has three trips to the Pro Bowl, a 46-18 record as a regular season starter and 10 playoff starts under his belt.

Boykin earned the backup job for the Seahawks, but the former TCU star is an undrafted rookie and far from an option Seattle can truly feel comfortable with.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Seahawks trailing 10-6, Wilson engineered a 75-yard drive and didn’t look hampered. He threw a touchdown to Doug Baldwin to give the Seattle the 12-10 win.
