It’s been a long time since the Miami Dolphins made the playoffs, but their first appearance since the 2008 season will be a tough test. The Dolphins head on the road to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round.
Dolphins vs. Steelers live stream: How to watch NFL playoffs online
The Dolphins are set for their first playoff game since the 2008 season.
The game is being televised on CBS, with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms in the booth and Tracy Wolfson on the sidelines. To watch it online, viewers will need a subscription to CBS All-Access, but the CBS local feed is available in select markets to PlayStation Vue customers.
The Dolphins haven’t won a playoff game since the 2000 season. The franchise has long wandered in the wilderness since Dan Marino retired, but first-year head coach Adam Gase has provided a spark. The Dolphins stumbled to a 1-4 start this season, but Gase rallied the team to a 9-2 finish and the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.
Part of the reason for the team’s big improvement was the performance of running back Jay Ajayi. The second-year back started the year buried in a committee behind Arian Foster, but when Foster got injured and retired, Ajayi got the chance to be a workhorse. He responded with a breakout campaign, reaching 200 yards in three games and finishing fourth in the league with 1,272 yards. The defense has done reasonably well and Cameron Wake is in the running for Comeback Player of the Year. A year after tearing his Achilles, the 34-year-old came roaring back with 11.5 sacks
Miami’s biggest concern is the quarterback position. Ryan Tannehill injured his ACL and won’t be back in time this week, so Matt Moore is getting the start once again. The 32-year-old journeyman has a decent stat line, throwing for eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and averaging 8.3 yards per attempt on a 63.2 completion percentage. He’s a clear downgrade from Tannehill, and the pressure will ramp up in the postseason for Moore to keep the offense on schedule.
The Steelers had a shaky start to the season, going 4-5. But once Ben Roethlisberger got back to being healthy, they’ve been one of the hottest teams in football, ripping off a seven-game winning streak to close out the regular season and winning the AFC North title once again.
Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell, and Antonio Brown form arguably the deadliest offensive trio in football, and when all three are clicking, the Steelers are nearly impossible to stop. Despite missing the first three games with a drug suspension, Bell still finished fifth in the league with 1,268 rushing yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He also dominated in the passing game, hauling in 75 catches for 616 yards while scoring nine total touchdowns. Bell is one of the best dual-threat running backs in the sport, capable of carrying the offense by himself.
Of course, the Steelers don’t need Bell to carry them, because the Roethlisberger-Brown connection is as strong as ever. Brown had 106 catches, only one behind Larry Fitzgerald for most in the league. He added 1,284 yards and 12 touchdowns, continuing to prove his case as the best wide receiver in football.
This is an interesting rematch from the regular season, since the Dolphins and Steelers met in Week 6. Pittsburgh lost badly, 30-15, as Ajayi went off for 204 rushing yards and Roethlisberger struggled in his first game back from a knee injury. However, these are vastly different teams now. The Steelers have nearly all their offensive weapons healthy, while the Dolphins are still adjusting to life without Tannehill. This makes for an intriguing matchup on the first game of Wild Card Sunday.
