Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebackers coach Joey Porter has been placed on leave from the team following his arrest Sunday night, according to reports.

Porter, a key assistant who also spent eight of his 13 years as a player with the franchise, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, public drunkenness and making terroristic threats, after an altercation with a doorman outside a bar in the South Side area of the city.

A police report of the incident suggests the 6’2, 250-lb Porter was “extremely agitated” and had “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his mouth and glassy, bloodshot eyes.”

He initially refused to allow officers to handcuff him before acquiescing. He was arraigned on the charges early Monday morning and was released from jail on $25,000 bond.

There’s no timeline on Porter’s suspension, but the leave will likely last at least through this week’s divisional showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. That could be a huge blow for the Steelers if they need someone to inappropriately step onto the field and goad an opposing player into a personal foul penalty on Sunday.
