Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Chris Carson was carted off the field Sunday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts after suffering a pretty nasty lower-leg injury late in the fourth quarter.

Pete Carroll said Monday on 710 AM in Seattle that it was a fracture below the knee for Carson, and he will be out, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team announced on Monday that Carson was placed on injured reserve. Carson is set to have surgery on Tuesday, Carroll said Monday via The News Tribune’s Greg Bell.

Carson was having a decent game against the Colts. He had 42 rushing yards on 12 carries and 24 receiving yards on three catches in the game.

Head coach Pete Carroll after the game told reporters he didn’t know if Carson would require surgery, but did term the ankle injury “significant.” But on Monday that information was updated to a fracture below the knee.

“Unfortunately on that play, you can hear something. That’s never good,” quarterback Russell Wilson told Michele Tafoya on the NBC television broadcast. “But I know that if anybody can come back, it’s going to be him. We’re going to rally around him. We have so many guys who can step up.

“It’s unfortunate to lose a special, special player and a guy like that.”

Carson played two seasons at Oklahoma State. He had 213 rushing attempts for for 1,076 yards for a 5.1 average and 13 touchdowns.
