Philip Rivers isn’t having a great day in New England. He threw only five passes in the first half as the Chargers fell behind 15-7 and played the world’s second-least convincing wide receiver in a failed wildcat call.
Philip Rivers lost 20 yards when he straight up dropped the ball, then recovered it
Rivers is so efficient that he forces his own fumbles.

That wasn’t as bad as what would follow, as Rivers’ inability to clutch the football cost his team 20 yards and a field goal opportunity midway through the third quarter.
Rivers somehow swatted the ball from his own hand, sending him diving to the turf to recover it a split second later. He lost 20 yards on the play, driving Los Angeles out of field goal range and setting up an unenviable third-and-31 situation. He’d throw a desperation pass into sextuple coverage on the ensuing play before the Chargers were forced to punt.
What this means for the Chargers: Rivers’ fumble erased a potential scoring drive on a day where the team’s only scoring threat came on an 87-yard Melvin Gordon touchdown run. What’s worse: the Patriots took their next drive into Los Angeles territory before kicking a 43-yard field goal to push the lead to 18-7.
What this means for Philip Rivers: Rivers has always been a goofy quarterback. Sunday’s performance is just more proof that perfect coordination is not a prerequisite to being a Pro Bowl passer.
