The NFL has decided on its discipline for Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso, handing down a $9,115 fine for an ugly late hit on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco during the Dolphins’ Thursday night loss last week, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Kiko Alonso fined $9k for late hit on Joe Flacco
Alonso avoided suspension for the hit that concussed the Ravens quarterback.

Here’s the hit in question, which knocked Flacco out of the game and sent him to concussion protocol. Alonso got a 15-yard penalty, but wasn’t ejected.
The hit probably wasn’t malicious (Alonso led with his shoulder rather than the helmet), and Flacco arguably slid too late, which set him up for a brutal hit. Nonetheless, Alonso contacted Flacco in the head area while he was giving up on the play, which is an unambiguous violation of league rules. His punishment was inevitable.
Flacco remains in the protocol and will likely be questionable for this week’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Ryan Mallett will take his place under center if he’s not cleared to play.
