Cam Newton compared the Panthers to the Titanic. Let that sink in

I think he’s trying to say Carolina’s heart will go on.

There’s an extremely good chance Cam Newton doesn’t know what the Titanic was. Either that, or he thinks the Panthers are doomed.

Newton lost one of his top targets when Carolina traded wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to the Bills. Fortunately for the former NFL MVP, Devin Funchess was able to pick up the slack in the team’s first game without Benjamin, drawing praise from the quotable quarterback — we think.

“These are our expectations,” Newton told the media in his postgame press conference. “Nobody is even giving us an opportunity. Yeah, we just lost a great player, but nevertheless, you know, the Titanic still has to go.”

The Titanic, of course, was given one massive opportunity after being billed as an unsinkable ship. And while it did have to go, its maiden voyage ended as poorly as one can end. The massive ship struck an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, taking more than 1,500 souls to the sea floor with her.

The tragedy is not only an oft-cited tale of hubris and poor management, it was also a hit James Cameron movie that, at one point, earned more money at the box office than any other film in history. Cameron, clearly, got zero dollars from Newton, who was only eight years old when the movie was released in theaters.

Newton’s teammates let him know the error of his ways.

Will Newton drop any more impressively inaccurate analogies on us in the future? We can only hope calling his revived Carolina team the Titanic was just the tip of the iceberg.
