The New York Jets have plenty of holes to fill in the 2017 NFL draft, but none may be as big as the void at quarterback. The franchise currently has three passers on its roster; together, they combined to go 1-6 as starters last fall.
Todd Bowles hints the Jets could draft a quarterback in the 1st round
The Jets’ current QB depth chart is the football equivalent of a torn-up bomb shelter.

So when Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters the team will be looking into adding a rookie signal caller this spring, it didn’t exactly come as a surprise.
“There is a scenario [where the Jets would use the No. 6 pick on a QB], yes,” Bowles told reporters at the league’s annual meeting in Phoenix. “We’ll see how it falls, and we’ll look at the pros and cons of it and we’ll make that decision. But there is a scenario.”
But Bowles wouldn’t tip his hand as to who New York might be targeting. When pressed on who the team likes, he playfully responded “Roger Staubach.”
Seventy-five-year-old Staubach, while only slightly older than newly signed Josh McCown, is unlikely to sign with the franchise.
The Jets should have a handful of appealing options when they make their selection at the top of the draft. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar has New York taking the first quarterback of the evening and selecting North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky with the No. 6 pick. Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer could both be options for the QB-needy club this April.
If the Jets fail to add a young passer this spring, the leftovers aren’t especially appealing.
McCown had trouble staying healthy for the Browns last fall, Bryce Petty looked every bit a former college system passer, and Christian Hackenberg failed to play a single snap his rookie season despite the team’s abject offensive misery. If New York can’t address its quarterback situation soon, the club will inch ever closer to Threat Level Midnight at MetLife Stadium.
