2017 NFL draft: Winners and losers from Friday

Day 2 of the draft featured plenty of trades, once again. Some teams stocked up on talent and got better, and some teams swung and missed in the second and third rounds.

The Browns needed to nail this draft, and so far they have, on paper at least. On Day 2, Cleveland finally got a quarterback, selecting Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer, and adding defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi in the third. Ogunjobi was probably the best defensive tackle prospect left on the board at that time, and Kizer was undoubtedly the most viable quarterback.

The Panthers, Vikings, and Patriots were all winners on Friday. The Seahawks and Bears left us scratching our heads.

Cleveland Browns: The Browns were once again big winners on Day 2. Cleveland finally got a quarterback, selecting DeShone Kizer with the 52nd overall pick. Kizer will need to develop, but Hue Jackson can turn him into a starter.

Cleveland also got a big run-stopping defensive tackle who’s strong enough to command double teams in defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Ogunjobi was tough against the run despite getting double-teamed consistently in college, and he’s a smart addition to Cleveland’s defense.

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers built on Thursday night’s selection of Christian McCaffrey and added multifaceted offensive weapon Curtis Samuel out of Ohio State in the second round. The additions of Samuel and McCaffrey instantly make the Panthers’ offense more difficult to defend. As a bonus, the Panthers added a blocker in tackle Taylor Moton with the last pick in the second round.

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings got Florida State running back Dalvin Cook with the 41st overall pick. Minnesota did add Latavius Murray as a free agent this offseason, but he’s not going to be able to replicate what Adrian Peterson did in his prime. Cook may not be able to, either, but his ceiling is high, and he’ll help fill that void.

Offensive line was a huge need for the Vikings, and they addressed it in the third round, selecting Ohio State center Pat Elflein at No. 70. Elflein is a center, but has the versatility to play guard and even tackle if necessary. That has to be appealing for a team that struggled so much along the line due to injury last season.

New England Patriots: New England has been quiet so far, but the Patriots’ only pick on Day 2 was a home run. Outside linebacker Derek Rivers is versatile and a perfect fit for the Patriots’ defense, and he’s a perfect value at No. 83. The rich get richer with this pick. New England traded up to select developmental tackle Antonio Garcia with the 85th pick, and he was just a bonus.

Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks grabbed Malik McDowell early in the second round, and while he’s talented, his technique needs work. Seattle selected LSU center Ethan Pocic with the 58th overall pick. Seattle needs offensive line help, and it’s limited in terms of the talent available in this draft. But Pocic doesn’t use leverage well and has some functional strength issues that will make his transition to the NFL more challenging.

In the third round, the Seahawks took cornerback Shaquill Griffin with the 90th overall pick. Seattle surely likes Griffin’s aggression in coverage, but he’s slow, and he’ll struggle to maintain coverage on NFL receivers.

With the 95th pick, which the Seahawks got from the Falcons in a Day 1 trade, they selected safety Delano Hill. Hill isn’t terribly athletic and he lacks functional change of direction skills that will challenge him in coverage. Hill was projected to be a fifth- or sixth-round selection, so he was a stretch for Seattle here.

Defensive tackle Nazair Jones was Seattle’s next pick at No. 102, and he’s got an interesting history. A rare disease, complex regional pain syndrome, caused him to drop a ton of weight and almost forced him out of football in high school. He bounced back, remarkably, but he has below-average instincts, and was projected as a fourth- or fifth-rounder.

The Seahawks at least finished strong with pick No. 106. Michigan wide receiver Amara Darboh is big and physical and skilled as a blocker. He’ll need to refine his technique but could grow into a quality contributor for Seattle.

Chicago Bears: Athletic small-school tight end Adam Shaheen is appealing because of his size, speed, and athleticism. But considering how the Bears’ defense struggled last season, Shaheen may have been a reach at No. 45 considering how much defensive talent was on the board at that point.
