NFL preseason 2017: Training camp news, notes, and highlights from around the league

We’re keeping an eye on the biggest news, and funniest quotes, to come out of training camp Tuesday.

It’s still July for another week, but as training camps begin throughout the NFL, we get our first real answers about the new season. Is Le’Veon Bell going to hold out? Will any of the Jets’ quarterbacks hit reporters with errant throws? Is any situation going to unfold as strangely as Lucky Whitehead’s release?

On Monday, the biggest training camp news to emerge — besides Whitehead’s curious situation — was that Andrew Luck will start on the PUP list. Luck should be ready to go by the time the season begins, though it’s doubtful he will play in any preseason games.

The Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys have already hit the practice field, while several teams’ rookies are already on site with their new squads. On Tuesday, the Panthers and Texans will show up for camp, and the Bengals and Buccaneers will have rookies reporting. By the end of the week, all 32 teams will be in full swing.

When Cam Newton takes the field with the Panthers, he’ll start the process of bouncing back from a down season in 2016. Newton is coming off offseason shoulder surgery, but he is expected to be a full go for training camp. Rookie running back Christian McCaffrey should help the Panthers offense get back to form, and the combination of McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel — another dynamic offensive weapon — should be fun for Panthers fans to watch during camp.

Another big-name rookie, Deshaun Watson, will join the Texans at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. He’ll be competing against Tom Savage, a veteran without much playing experience, to try to earn the starting quarterback role.

We’ll keep you updated with any details — injuries, highlights, fun quotes — from training camp Tuesday.

Highlights

Bye, mom!

It was like the first day of school for Panthers rookie Curtis Samuel.

Samuel wasn’t the only one with a sweet ride.

Kurt Coleman wasn’t impressed.

Best quotes

He isn’t wrong.

Well played.

News

The Texans are getting ready to head to camp, and Duane Brown isn’t there

No holdout for Greg Olsen

The Broncos will welcome back a familiar face

The Cowboys are standing by their decision on Lucky Whitehead, even though he was cleared.

Cam Newton’s a big dude.

So is Kelvin Benjamin, but the team is happy with his weight.

Injuries

Malik Hooker, the Colts’ first-round pick in the draft, will start training camp on the PUP. That’s not great news for the Colts, or for Hooker, who battled hamstring issues in college.

Hooker doesn’t seem concerned.

The Ravens will be without running back Kenneth Dixon this season, but repairing his meniscus will hold up better than a trim.

The Patriots placed two key defenders on PUP.

Rookie cornerback Teez Tabor and tackle Cyrus Kouandjio join Martin on the non-football injury list. Left tackle Taylor Decker is on Detroit’s PUP list.
