NFL scores 2017: Results, highlights, and news from Aug. 12

Highlights and results from Saturday’s preseason action.

Look who it is!

Nearly seven minutes into the first quarter, the Raiders are finally going to get a possession. The Cardinals opened the game with a 14-play, 70-yard touchdown drive capped by a touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Brittan Golden.

The Cardinals are giving quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich a chance to call plays. That first drive was a good way to show he has some coaching chops.

Looks like we won’t be seeing Derek Carr or Marshawn Lynch tonight. The Raiders opened the game with EJ Manuel at quarterback and DeAndre Washington at running back.

More plays like this from Robert Nkemdiche will help the Cardinals get over the loss of Calais Campbell.

Beast Mode may not be playing, but he’s going to capture headlines anyway after it was revealed he sat during the playing of the national anthem before the game. He joins a lengthy list of players who followed in Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps with the protest.

The Cardinals looked like they had a chance to scoop up a fumble and run for a touchdown, but Connor Cook came with the hit stick that nearly forced a fumble of his own.

Oooh, those Rams helmets, though.

Cooper Kupp got his first reception in a Rams uniform and then a few plays later got his first touchdown. He probably didn’t think it would come via fumble recovery, though.

No Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott tonight. KELLEN MOORE TIME INSTEAD WOO.

It was a short night for Jared Goff, but he completed three of four passes for 36 yards and looked pretty sharp. The Rams can be happy with what they got out of him.

The Cowboys hope Taco Charlton can be the premier pass rusher they’ve been looking for. This is a good sign that he might be.

Gerald Everett is already showing why the Rams thought highly enough of him to draft him in the second round. He has just two receptions for 12 yards, but he’s shown some athleticism and a nice gain on a crossing route was nullified by a holding penalty.

Kellen Moore couldn’t get the Cowboys in the end zone, but Cooper Rush dropped one right in the bread basket.

After the touchdown, Rush has completed all eight of his pass attempts for 99 yards. These rookie quarterbacks, man.

Luke McCown finished off the game for Dallas, but completed six of 13 passes for 31 yards and fumbled twice. It’s safe to say Rush got the better of him in the quarterback battle tonight.

The same could be said about Dan Orlovsky, who finished the game for the Rams, but was clearly outplayed by Goff and Sean Mannion.

Uhh ... Titans, you awake?

The Jets opened the game with a 53-yard bomb to Robby Anderson followed by a short touchdown pass to Charone Peake. Josh McCown is cooking early.

Just a few days ago Peake was trying to convince everyone that the Jets have at least one 1,000-yard receiver on the roster. That’s still really, really ambitious, but that’s a good way to start preseason and look less crazy.

Marcus Mariota is an awfully easy guy to root for. The Titans posted video of him having a special moment with a few fans before the game.

The Jets saw all they needed to see out of McCown on the first drive. He leaves the game after only four passes for 72 yards and now it’s Christian Hackenberg time.

The return of Mariota was pretty uneventful. He played two drives and finished with two completions on three attempts for 15 yards and another six rushing yards.

McCown gave the game an exciting start, but absolutely nothing happened between his exit after the first draft and halftime.

No touchdown here, but it was still one hell of a catch by Taywan Taylor that set up a field goal.

Hackenberg played most of the game for the Jets, but leaned heavily on check downs. He finished 18-of-25 passing for 127 yards. Reminder: McCown had 72 passing yards on four attempts.

The Titans can hang their hat on a pretty solid defensive performance, with the exception of the first drive. There really aren’t many positives to take from the offensive showing.

The first week of the NFL preseason has been an eventful one, with position battles playing out and rookies getting their chances to shine. Things will continue on Saturday evening with three more games on the schedule, featuring varying levels of intrigue.

The Jets have rock-bottom expectations heading into the season, and things could get truly ugly if Christian Hackenberg doesn’t show any signs of progress. Last year’s second-round pick should see plenty of snaps in the preseason opener against the Titans, if only because Josh McCown is an aging veteran and Bryce Petty is firmly at No. 3 on the depth chart. If it’s anything like Hackenberg’s training camp performances, we could be in for a bumpy ride.

The Titans, on the other hand, have a legit franchise QB in Marcus Mariota, who will get the start but only play a handful of snaps. Mariota is fully recovered from the broken leg that ended his 2016 season early, but Tennessee is wisely playing it safe with his health. The bigger injury concern is first-round rookie Corey Davis, who is week to week with a pulled hamstring.

The Cowboys and Rams both saw their depth charts upended this week, for entirely different reasons. Ezekiel Elliott got a six-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, and Dallas has to figure out the short-term starter if his appeal fails. Darren McFadden is the direct backup, with Alfred Morris and Rod Smith also in the mix. Meanwhile, the Rams pulled off a stunning trade Friday, acquiring Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills and giving Jared Goff a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Watkins reunites with former Bills teammate Robert Woods, both of whom will likely hang out on the bench all night.

The last game of the night sees the Raiders taking on the Cardinals. Oakland’s big offseason move was luring Marshawn Lynch out of retirement, but he’ll probably get the veteran treatment and sit this game out. DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard will battle for the backup spot, which could be one to watch given Lynch’s recent injury history. Bruce Arians didn’t play most of his starers in the Hall of Fame Game and that might be the case again here. Blaine Gabbert could get a chance to build on his solid performance last week and win the No. 2 quarterback job from Drew Stanton.
