New England Patriots 30, Detroit Lions 28

Touchdown Tom has connected with Chris Hogan for the first two touchdowns of the game.

Unfortunately, Julian Edelman went down in the first quarter holding his knee.

Tom Brady is cooking the Lions defense. The Patriots put up 24 points in the 1st quarter.

Stafford threw a touchdown pass to Marvin Jones in the second quarter to make the score 24-7 at the half.

The Lions staged a bit of a comeback in the second half. Stafford threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Washington to make it 24-14, while Jared Abrbrederis cut Detroit’s deficit to three points with a touchdown pass from Jake Rudock.

Detroit took the lead for the first time in the game when Washington plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out.

Two more field goals from Stephen Gostkowski was enough for the Patriots to get the lead and the victory.

Seattle Seahawks 26, Kansas City Chiefs 13

Spencer Ware was carted off of the field midway through the first quarter. He was immediately ruled out of the game and it has the look of a major, long-term injury. Rookie Kareem Hunt took over as the starting running back.

Blair Walsh and Sam Ficken have traded field goals to make it 3-3.

After another Blair Walsh field goal, Russell Wilson tossed a touchdown pass to Tre Madden, which gave the Seahawks a 13-3 lead for ... about 12 seconds.

After a pretty bad kickoff return earlier, De’Anthony Thomas redeemed himself by dusting the Seahawks for 95 yards to make it 13-10 Chiefs.

Wilson led the Seahawks on a two-minute drill and Walsh added another three points at the end of the second quarter.

Blair Walsh got two more field goals in the third quarter to extend Seattle’s lead to multiple possessions.

Patrick Mahomes, still playing with the second team behind Alex Smith, had a much tougher game here than last week. He completed just 8 of 15 passes for 70 yards as the Chiefs could only manage three points in the second half.

A fourth-quarter touchdown from Austin Davis to Tanner McEvoy iced the game for Seattle.

Before the games

We’re in the third week of the NFL preseason, the “dress rehearsal” for many teams around the league. For the most part, this is the final game to make preparations for the regular season, with many starters playing the entire first half and sometimes well into the third quarter. There are two games Friday night featuring playoff teams from last season, including the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Lions are coming off a 9-7 campaign and wild card loss. They return largely the same core, minus the since-retired Anquan Boldin. Detroit badly needs its backfield to stay healthy after injuries plagued Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick all season. The offensive line is also a question mark after left tackle Taylor Decker underwent shoulder surgery earlier in the offseason.

In the other game of the evening, the Seahawks host the Chiefs in a battle of former division rivals. Seattle is coming off strong wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings, with Russell Wilson looking as healthy and sharp as ever. Unfortunately, the Seahawks also have a big hole at left tackle after George Fant tore his ACL in last week’s game. It’s another setback for an offensive line that’s been a consistent weakness in recent years.

The Chiefs may or may not have a quarterback controversy on their hands this year. First-round rookie Patrick Mahomes has been outstanding in preseason action, showing off his big arm and playmaking skills. On the other hand, Alex Smith has also been good, or at least good enough to not lose his job right away. Head coach Andy Reid is firmly backing Smith at the moment, so we’ll see how this situation plays out over the season.
