The New England Patriots suffered another loss to their wide receiver group when Danny Amendola left their season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs with a concussion. Amendola was ruled out for the game.

Amendola was having a productive game before the concussion, getting six catches for 100 yards while filling Julian Edelman’s spot in the slot position. Tom Brady will now be another weapon short as he attempts to mount a comeback.

What does this mean for the Patriots? New England was counting on Amendola playing a bigger role following the loss of Edelman, who tore his ACL in the preseason. That the Patriots ruled him out entirely for the game indicates that this concussion could be a multi-week affair. Amendola has a long history of injuries in his eight-year career, playing all 16 games just two times.

With Amendola out of the picture, the Patriots will likely lean harder on their group of pass-catching running backs, such as James White and Rex Burkhead. They also have Chris Hogan available, although he’s been bottled up by Marcus Peters all night.
