By the numbers: The record Tom Brady broke on the way to beating the Colts

The Patriots-Colts rivalry is hardly a rivalry as New England has now won the past eight meetings. Andrew Luck has never won when facing Tom Brady.

The Patriots beat a decimated Colts team that’s as injured as a team could be in Week 5. It was a 38-24 victory for New England that Indianapolis nearly fought its way back into in the fourth quarter before Tom Brady and the Patriots really got cooking. The Patriots improved to 3-2 with the win while the Colts fell to 1-4; it’s safe to say not much is going right for Andrew Luck and Co.

Let’s take a look at a by-the-numbers breakdown of the game, which saw Brady break one NFL record and reach another major milestone.

500: Tom Brady joined the 500 touchdown club with a 34-yard bomb to Josh Gordon in the fourth quarter on Thursday night. He became the third quarterback in NFL history to reach the milestone, joining Peyton Manning (539) and Brett Favre (508). Drew Brees could join the club very soon as he currently boasts 496 passing touchdowns. The 34-yard touchdown was the longest play of the game by either team at that point. Shortly thereafter, Patriots rookie running back Sony Michel matched that yardage exactly on an impressive run.

71: Gordon became the 71st receiver to catch a touchdown pass from Brady, breaking a tie with Vinny Testaverde, who connected with 70 different receivers during his NFL career.

23, 27, 203: Tom Brady put up more completions (23), passing attempts (27) and passing yards (203) in the first half than any other half this season, per NFL Research.

38: The yardage on Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri’s missed field goal in the first quarter. He later made up for it with a 54-yarder.

2016: Brady had his first rushing touchdown since the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs in January 2016 and first regular season rushing touchdown since Week 13, 2015.

3: Julian Edelman quickly made his presence felt in his return from a four-game suspension with three catches on the Patriots’ opening drive. He finished with seven catches for 57 yards.

3:2: Both Brady and Luck threw three touchdowns and two interceptions in the game. But Brady’s passer rating was much higher than Luck’s at 102.6 compared to 84.4 for the Colts quarterback. With that said, Luck was missing his best receiver in T.Y. Hilton, among many other injured Colts. You have to wonder how different this game would have been had the Colts been healthy.

26: The number of first downs for both teams on Thursday night.

439 vs. 438: The Colts actually had one more yard of offensive output (439) than the Patriots (438). This game never seemed all that close, but the stats paint a different picture.

110: The total yardage from Michel who fell two yards short of 100 rushing yards, but had his second straight game with 100+ yards from scrimmage.

8: The Colts have lost their last eight games against the Patriots.

0-6: Luck is now 0-6 against Brady in his NFL career.
