Spread picks for every NFL game in Week 5

I’ve got five picks against the spread I’m feeling strongest about in Week 5, and then a pick for the remaining 10 games.

We’re back for Week 5 of the 2018 NFL season, and we had a high scoring and at times entertaining opener. Tom Brady reached 500 career touchdown passes in the New England Patriots 38-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football to get the week started.

The return of football means fantasy football and gambling are back in our lives. There is nothing quite like a little football gambling to make games that much more exciting. This season, I am taking part in the Westgate SuperContest. SB Nation’s partners over at Odds Shark are sponsoring my entry again. The contest requires selecting five games each week and picking them against the spread.

I’ll be offering up all five SuperContest entries each week, along with picks against the spread for every game each week. I put together a 3-2 performance in Week 4, and actually went 11-2-2 for for my total picks. I’m not 11-8-1 for the year in the SuperContest. Here are my SuperContest entries for Week 5.

Jaguars (+3) over CHIEFS

This could end up being the best game of the week. You get a dynamic Chiefs offense against a stout Jaguars defense. Blake Bortles gets a crack at an awful Chiefs offense, and I think that could keep this sufficiently close. This is Patrick Mahomes’ toughest challenge of the season, and I think the Jaguars defense contains him enough that we see Jacksonville win outright.

BILLS (+3.5) over Titans

The public money is heavily backing Tennessee, which is not surprising. They are the better team by a sizable margin. And yet, this is exactly where the upset, or at least strong competition happens. Marcus Mariota is not at 100 percent, and this is a team coming off a big win over the defending Super Bowl champs. It would appear the Eagles are suffering a Super Bowl hangover, but there is some value in this line.

LIONS (+1) over Packers

The Packers handled their business against Buffalo last week, but they are still a shaky team. Detroit is having its own issues, but Matthew Stafford should be able to put up some big numbers this week. The Lions are looking solid against the spread thus far, and I think there is an upset brewing in the Motor City.

TEXANS (-3) over Cowboys

Dallas just barely scratched out a home win over Detroit last week, and now has to travel to Houston. The Texans finally got in the win column and I think that’s going to get this offense going. The Dallas defense has some strengths but is shaky enough that Houston should be able to clear this number.

Washington (+6.5) over SAINTS

New Orleans wins regularly at home, but they do not win their backers money. The Saints have won nine of their last ten at home, but have failed to cover in four of the last five. They’ve historically struggled against Washington, losing five straight against the spread, and this Washington defense should give Drew Brees enough trouble to keep it close. Add in Alex Smith giving this offense a boost, and we might see an outright Washington win.

Here are all my picks for Week 5:

PATRIOTS vs. Colts (+10.5): Colts — LOSS
BROWNS vs. Ravens (-3): Ravens
CHIEFS vs. Jaguars (+3): Jaguars
BILLS vs. Titans (-3.5): Bills
PANTHERS vs. Giants (+7): Giants
JETS vs. Broncos (+1): Jets
STEELERS vs. Falcons (+3): Steelers
LIONS vs. Packers (-1): Lions
BENGALS vs. Dolphins (+6.5): Dolphins
CHARGERS vs. Raiders (+4.5): Chargers
49ERS vs. Cardinals (+4): 49ers
EAGLES vs. Vikings (+3): Vikings
SEAHAWKS vs. Rams (-7): Seahawks
TEXANS vs. Cowboys (+3): Texans
SAINTS vs. Washington (+6.5): Washington
