U.S. Bank Stadium hosts its first Super Bowl on Sunday when the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles collide on football’s biggest stage. Since it’s Minneapolis in February, it’s no surprise that the game will be indoors.
When will the Super Bowl be played in the open again?
Just wait a couple of years, and then we’re outside again.

Next year’s Super Bowl will be in Atlanta, which is set to host its first NFL championship since 2000, this time in the recently built Mercedes-Benz Stadium that comes with a retractable roof. While the Super Bowl is often played in domed stadiums to eliminate the spectre of bad weather impacting the game, there are still plenty of outdoor venues that are slated to host the big game — including the sites for Super Bowls 54, 55, and 56.
Upcoming Super Bowl Host Sites
Super Bowl | Venue | Location | Indoor/Outdoor? | Has it hosted before? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 53 | Mercedes-Benz Stadium | Atlanta, GA | Indoor | No |
| 54 | Hard Rock Stadium | Miami, FL | Outdoor | Yes |
| 55 | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, FL | Outdoor | Yes |
| 56 | Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park | Inglewood, CA | Outdoor | No |
So if you’re a fan of the Falcons, Dolphins, Buccaneers, Rams, or Chargers, you’re in luck. Your dreams of having home-field advantage at the Super Bowl remain intact. Even better, if you’re a fan of epic outdoor halftime performances — like Prince’s GOAT showing at Super Bowl XLI — you might just be in luck.
