Never forget Lane Kiffin told Alshon Jeffery he’d pump gas for a living if he went to South Carolina

He was wrong.

Alshon Jeffery caught the first touchdown in Super Bowl 52 against the New England Patriots with a leaping effort. It was an incredible play.

ESPN’s Chris Low did a story in March of 2009, which detailed then-Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin telling Jeffery what would happen if he chose to go to South Carolina:

According to Jeffery and Wilson, Kiffin told Jeffery that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina.

Jeffery was doing his best to stay awake at that point, but that comment from Kiffin woke him up. He clearly hasn’t forgotten it, either.

”He said it, but it’s not worth talking about,” Jeffery said.

It was never a question for Jeffery to go to South Carolina, who is a native of St. Matthews, which is near Columbia.

“It’s just what I wanted to do: stay at home and help the home school,” he told Low in 2009. “I started looking at it from all different angles and not just football.”

This doesn’t look like pumping gas:

Jeffery’s always been a confident player. It’s why he guaranteed before the season that he’d be in the Super Bowl.

Kiffin’s never going to be able to escape that one. Especially after Jeffery made big plays the biggest game in football.
